01/16/19 Group Ride Recap

It was a bit on the colder side for this group ride, but definitely not the coldest. When you live in Miami, the cool weather is always appreciated. The temperature hovered around the mid/high 50’s, and with the added windchill from skating at 20+mph, it made the ride extra sweet.

Riders breakdown

Custom Built Boards

We had 8 riders in total. The group was led by the Miami Esk8 founders – Rod and Adam. Both were rocking their custom built boards. Mason another longtime Miami Esk8 member joined with his custom built board. The custom boards were definitely recking havoc on the streets.

Manufactured Boards

Antonio used an Evolve Bamboo GT and Albert used an Enertion Raptor 2 board that was killing it on the street. Both Giankee and I had our Evolve Carbon GTs.

We had a new rider join us, Rad. Rad has only been in Miami for less than a year and picked up a Boosted Plus back in November. He told us he’s been eager to ride with the group after watching all of the RonsWorldMiami group ride videos. Rad finally had a chance to come out and ride with us this past week. After the ride, Rad told me that he had a blast on the ride and that the ride was better than anything he expected.

Ride Planning

It’s been a while since the group has gone on a good long ride. Most of us were eager as we planned out the trip details. Eventually, we decided take our talents out of South Beach and ride to Coconut Grove. This can be considered one of our long rides, if not, The long ride.

Don’t forget your charger when going on a group ride.

The group when I forgot my charger.

Pit Stop

We made it to the Miami Famous Casolas pizza shop on 17th and US1. We ordered 2 pies and charged up our boards. I however, opted not to bring my charger. I figured my board would last. Not to self: Don’t forget your charger when going on a group ride – rookie mistake.

Going back to the beach

After about an hour and a half at Casolas, we took off in the same direction we came. This time we were riding back to South Beach.

A little race

On the way back Albert – Enertion Raptor 2 and Giankee – Evolve Carbon GT both decided to have a street race. I don’t think there is any footage of the actual race, but there is some footage just after the first race. Giankee wants to race again since during the first race, he was on Fast mode and not in GT mode. It wouldn’t have mattered, the Raptor 2 was by far the faster board. It seems the Direct Drive hub motors of the Raptor 2 were much too powerful for the Evolve Carbon GT.

End Ride

We all made it back to the meeting spot, some with less battery life than others. In total, we rode for just over 20 miles. My top speed was just at 23mph using my Evolve Carbon GT w/107mm wheels.

We all made it back safely which is most important. The crew wore protective gear on this ride and we all had lights. Check out Shredlights, these are lights that fit almost all skateboard trucks, including Electric Skateboards. It’s important to ride safe, wear protective gear, have lights and obey the road laws.
